UPDATE: 5:00 p.m. A recent news release by Missouri Highway Patrol describes the officers’ confrontation with the deceased subject.
Two officers approached the man after responding to reports of a burglary in the area. An individual matching a description was seen holding a knife.
The person ignored commands to drop the weapon, and reportedly charged at the officers, who then, discharged their weapons. After attempting to administer first aid and call emergency responders, the subject died at the scene.
Further investigation revealed a suicide note found at a residence, alleged to have been written by the deceased subject, which indicated his intentions to create a confrontation with law enforcement.
UPDATE: (02/24/16) 3:15 p.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate a fatal police involved shooting this morning.
The person shot has been identified as Robert Keil, 16.
Authorities report that two officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Southwest 20th Street around 5 a.m. for a suspected prowler. Investigators now believe Keil called in the prowler report. Investigators say the teen was armed but would not specify with what type of weapon.
Keil reportedly lunged at police. Authorities believe this may be a case of suicide by cop.

Authorities report that two officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Southwest 20th Street around 5 a.m. for a suspected prowler. Investigators now believe the subject that was shot called in the prowler report. That person has been identified only as a 16-year-old resident.
Investigators say the teen was armed but would not specify with what type of weapon. Police believe this may be a case of suicide by cop, but the investigation is on-going.

Reports indicate two Blue Springs officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Southwest 20th Street on reports of a possible prowler in the area. Once on scene, the officers came in contact with a subject and opened fire.
The identity of the subject has not been released, pending positive identification.
Police have not released a motive in the shooting and it is unknown whether the fatally injured individual was in possession of a weapon at the time of the incident. Details remain unclear as the investigation, now handle by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, continues.
One local media outlet is reporting both involved officers maintain less than five years with the force.
